Dive Information
Menjangan Island Diving
Menjangan Island is famous for having Balis most beautiful wall-diving. The underwater topography depends on the exact dive site but most of them start on the island shelf where we tie to a mooring. Conditions at Menjangan Island tend to be very gentle with visibility getting up to 40 meters at certain times of the year. The reef scenery, coupled with the marine life, is perfect for those wanting to get photos. The dramatic backdrop of the walls and an abundance of fish life makes it easy for photographers to get that perfect shot. It is unusual to see many large pelagics in this area due to the island being protected from the cold currents coming in from the sea. Although whale sharks are occasionally spotted and even a sperm whale was seen here this year.
Dive Sites
- Eel Garden - This is located at the most western point of Menjangan Island. To navigate, we usually start on the North wall and drift along the west coast to end up in the channel between the mainland of Bali and the island of Menjangan. There can be some current at this dive site and so we recommend that divers with little experience start at some of the other beautiful sites around the island. Due to this current, this site has a fantastic diversity of fish and coral. Good to snorkel as well, this dive site is situated next to the most beautiful virgin beach of the island. This dive site is a must during your stay in West Bali National Park.
- Anchor Wreck/Kapal Budak - Another famous dive site of Menjangan Island is called Kapal Budak, which means Anchor Wreck in Bahasa. It got its name from the large anchor that lies at about 6 meters. At about 33 meters, lies some pieces of a large wooden cargo boat built 150 years ago. Nobody knows the name of the shipwreck or why it is laying on the bottom of this gigantic wall. Some of the remains are still underwater but a lot of them have been taken out by divers. This dive sites is actually not renown for the wreck itself, but more for the diversity of the impressive wall. There is a good chance to see Green Turtles at this dive site.
- Sandy Slopes - Sandy slopes is easy to notice from the boat. At an average depths of 4 meters, you have a giant sandy playground. Ideal to encounter numerous flounders and eel gardens. Usually, without current and amazing visibility, this dive sites give us the best conditions to make all new divers fall in love with scuba diving. Meters away from the sandy area, a slope descends to about 30 meters, which allows us to explore beautiful corals after exploring the shallow area.
- Coral Garden - A wonderful underwater garden with numerous varieties of hard and soft corals. Divers of all levels are always amazed by the diversity of corals and the health of this reef that lays at 5 meters deep before the wall starts. We notice a lot of cleaning fish in this area, which makes it definitely one of our favorites to observe different fish behaviors.
- Temple Point/Bat Cave - Ignoring the underwater world, these 2 dives sites have the best landscapes on all of Menjangan island. Temple Point starts at the feet of a huge Ganesh statue on top a cliff, while Bat Cave is near the entrance of a few shallow caves filled with hundreds of resting bats. Due to the current at these sites, both dive sites can normally be covered during one dive, a beautiful, gentle drift dive. Very occasionally, you can also be lucky enough to see whale sharks around.
- Pos Dua - POS II is the most popular dive site on Menjangan Island as it is the closest to Bali mainland. It features some of the most dramatic walls as well as your best chance to see a pygmy seahorse on gorgonian sea fans! This site offers fantastic conditions for our PADI Open Water Diver students as well as any students who wish to participate in a try diving experience at Menjangan Island.

We stayed at The Menjangan Resort and dove with Abyss Ocean World in April 2023 after three weeks diving in Raja Ampat, one week diving in Amed (Bali), and five days diving in Tulamben (Bali). This review covers both The Menjangan Resort and Abyss Ocean World. We were at The Menjangan for five days.We had pre-booked our five day stay and diving through our travel agents, Anne and Scott with Blue Water Dive Travel, who did a great job with our entire trip. The Menjangan Resort, Abyss Ocean World and the diving, particularly at Menjangan Island, far exceeded our expectations. Menjangan is really off the beaten path. In fact, it about as far as you can get in Bali from the hustle and bustle of Denpasar and still be in Bali. I suspect that we would have never found the place on our own but Anne with Bluewater lives in Bali and strongly encouraged us to visit Menjangan. We are really glad she did.The Menjangan Resort is a magical place. There are a small number of rooms in a very large (382 hectares) but mostly undeveloped area within the national park. The food, accommodations and service are all first class. Don’t miss the tree top views from the top of The Bali Tower or dining on the oceanfront deck at the waterfront area. The area outside the resort is mostly rural villages. I enjoyed exploring the area by bike. There are restaurants at both the Tower and the waterfront area. One can walk most everywhere within the resort and and the walking is delightful with numerous monkeys, birds and other things to see. However, depending on the location of your room, it could be a long walk to the Tower and/or the waterfront area for meals and activities. There are loaner bicycles placed around the resort. They are a great way to get around. However, the quickest way to get around is to simply take one of the free shuttles (they are like large, open air, double decker golf carts) that constantly shuttle guests around the resort. We used them a lot simply because we had other things to do (including diving, snorkeling and kayaking) and sometimes did not want to take the time to walk or bike.At the time of our visit, there was no dive operation within the resort. However, the resort works closely with Abyss Ocean World. After many weeks diving in Indonesia we had been spoiled by the high level of service that seemed to exist most everywhere (at least at the places that Bluewater Dive Travel books). However, Abyss Ocean World is right up there with the best of them.We dove two days with Abyss Ocean World. Each day we did three boat dives. The first dive day we dove Pemuteran Bay which is in a small town about 15 km from the resort/national park. Abyss picked us up from the resort by private car. All of the dives were made from a very unique local fishing boat. The captain picked us up from the beach. We were the only guests on the boat. Abyss supplied lunch from a local restaurant. We ate on the beach. The whole day was a really nice experience. The diving at Pemuteran was quite good, but not spectacular. Well, it probably was spectacular by most standards, but we had just spent three weeks in Raja Ampat so that skewed our perspective. The next dive day was Menjangan Island. Abyss Ocean World picked us by fast boat from the resort jetty. Menjangan Island is really spectacular. It must be is the best kept dive secret in Bali. Divers who go to Bali and never discover Menjangan Island are missing out. Yes, it is off the beaten path and requires a long car ride to get there, but the diving is worth it.The Menjangan Resort/Abyss Ocean World was then one place on our entire trip where we really felt we made a mistake not staying longer. Anne had told us how nice it was, but we just could not get comfortable extending our trip beyond 45 days. But the next time we go to Bali, we will go back for more diving at Menjangan Island.

The Menjangan Resort and Spa is, by far, our favorite place to stay in Bali. We've visited 4 times already and return regularly for many reasons. The resort is quite secluded, nestled in a natural park and right by the ocean. The resort is quite widespread, meaning one will use safari cars to get from one place to another. For example, from the Monsoon Lodge to the beach are (beach, jetty, Pantai restaurant). We've stayed at both, the Monsoon lodge and the beach villas. While the Monsoon lodge has a pool, the spacious beach villas do not but they are - as the name suggests - located right on the beach. From here one can watch deer and monkeys lingering around, especially during low tide. The highlight of the Menjangan Resort are its staff: extremely kind and helpful, professional and discreet. They all add a personal touch to one's day by knowing the guest's daily activity and asking how it was. The hospitality is simply amazing and we greatly appreciate itThe food is amazing: they serve Indonesian and International cuisine and it's always incredibly delicious. We visited the Menjangan post-Covid and they no longer had a dive center on site, but no worries: they highly recommended a locale dive center which came to pick us up by boat or car every day. By boat when diving around Menjangan island and by car when diving in Pemuteran.
