CARIBBEAN DIVE RESORT AREAS
In alphabetical order, here are some of the best resort areas in the Caribbean.
AMBERGRIS CAYE, BELIZE
Close to San Pedro on the northern stretch of Belizes coastline, Ambergris Caye encompasses some fantastic barrier reef diving, as well as offering day trips to the Turneffe Atoll area. There are many resorts and a good nightlife here, with plenty to keep you entertained in the evenings or on days off.
BONAIRE
The shore-diving capital of the Caribbean, Bonaires easy beach dives and excellent dive infrastructure make for a very relaxing dive break. The island has a unique drive and dive mentality, allowing visitors to dive independently - as much or as little as they choose. There are plenty of dive-orientated accommodation options on Bonaire, and prices tend to be reasonable.
COZUMEL, MEXICO
The island of Cozumel is a very popular tourist resort and great family destination, with loads of top-side activities, great nightlife, and a huge range of accommodation to suit all budgets. The diving is also nicely varied, with shallow reefs at the north and south of the island perfect for snorkelers and beginners, and the deeper reefs and walls of the north coast offering an exciting variety of marine life to more experienced divers.
WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO
Curacao offers divers a little bit of everything, with fringing reef and calm, clear waters providing access to some fantastic macro, healthy corals, and an abundance of marine life. Diving here is relaxed and easy, with drift and wreck dives also possible. The majority of resorts center around the capital, Willemstad, at the eastern end of the island, which is home to over 700 historic buildings and museums, as well as a floating market.
GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS
The largest and most sophisticated of the three Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman offers a great dive infrastructure and some very well-established dive centers offering access to impressive wall diving, and famous sites such as the USS Kittiwake and Stingray City. Some of the best resorts in the Caribbean can be found on Grand Cayman, however, excellent top-side facilities mean prices tend to be a bit more expensive than Roatan or Belize.
ROATAN, HONDURAS
Roatan is characterized by fabulous dive resorts at reasonable prices, and although it is less developed than other Caribbean islands, many professional dive operators are offering a great service. There is a huge variety of diving here, including wrecks, caves, walls, and encounters with sharks and dolphins. Topside activities are perfect for nature lovers.
