Dive Overview
Bonaire is not typically known for its larger creatures but there is plenty to keep you occupied with your wide angle lens. Large sponges and sea-fans dominate the reef scape and the salt pier has excellent wide-angle opportunities. There are a few shipwrecks and large tarpon are quite common as well as turtles, barracudas and a few decent size groupers. You can often find tarpon on night dives using the lights to hunt.

More information about Caribbean diving
Klein Bonaire, a small uninhabited island off the coast of Bonaire, boasts superior visibility compared to the mainland, thanks to the lack of runoff. The dive sites around Klein Bonaire feature pristine coral reefs, soft corals, and sea fans. Popular dive spots include Jerry’s Reef, known for its abundance of small critters, and Forest, where black coral trees create a captivating underwater landscape. The calm waters and rich marine biodiversity make Klein Bonaire a must-visit for divers looking for tranquil yet vibrant underwater scenes.

Bonaire is one of the most diverse coral reef habitats within the Caribbean. The weather is usually close to the same year round. There are various resorts to stay and dive while visiting Bonaire. I have visited Bonaire now around 8-10 times. Divi Flamingo Bonaire resorts offers excellent diving accommodations, friendly staff and service. The best thing about Divi is their wonderful dock with oversized lockers for gear storage. This sure makes the trip 100% “lazy man” diving. No trucking gear back and forth to hotel room. Tanks and multiple clean rinse tanks available at the dock. There are ladders on both sides for exit and optional walk off platform at end of dock. Their dive boats are never overcrowded and with the addition of their newest boat Pressure Drop they have added probably the nicest dive boat on Bonaire. The other dive boats are excellent as well. The dive masters are friendly, safe and great teachers. At the resort the food at the resort is reproducible, reliable and priced accordingly. The restaurant staff does a great job especially at lunchtime getting food brought out to hungry divers fast. Bonaire has some of the best water in the world. The rooms are clean and best of all right on the water. People who are looking for a fancy resort please go somewhere else in the world on vacation. Bonaire is unique and best appreciated by the simple living diving crowd or people wanted to enjoy a peaceful vacation. There are also multiple excellent restaurants within walking distance from hotel. I’d highly recommend Divi over other resorts on Bonaire as I have stayed at the others. Again their dock with extra large storage lockers really makes a diving vacation so easy and helps set Divi apart from other resorts in Bonaire. Dive operation and resort is photography friendly. Their house reef is excellent with diverse creatures (turtles, octopi, tarpon, mantis shrimp, all Caribbean tropic fish, etc) to be discovered right off the dock. The house reef is a great location for new divers or night dives.

Felt very much at home at the friendly Divi Flamingo. My non-diving (but snorkeler) spouse had a great time, too, which is an important plus. Loved that Divi was so close to town. I took the 3-tank boat diving package and loved it. Great short boat rides, great marine life, relaxed crew, unlimited shore diving on great house reef, Nitrox available at a good price. Saw a (rare, for Bonaire) Manta Ray. Hope to go again soon! Our room was an upgraded room...it was on the water and had a balcony...but we spent most of our time outside or in town. The resort had two nice pools, a restaurant and a couple of bars. There is a casino on site but we aren't gamblers so we never even stepped inside. When not snorkeling, my wife spent most of her time by the pool or on the beach reading...that is what she likes on vacation. Bonaire is not really a very exciting place if you are not a water person. There is great windsurfing on the windy side of island but we only watched on our last non-diving day.Resort is on the old side and a little rundown (but clean and refurbished) but the people and the dive op and boats are top notch. Great buffet breakfast everyday.Sea horses and frog fish are the special treats in terms of marine life. Whole island is protected and has been protected for many years.
