Dive Information
Malapascua Dive Overview
Malapascua is known for some of the best shark diving in the Philippines, famous for the thresher sharks which can be seen at any time of year at Monad Shoal and Kemod Shoal. This area is reputedly the only place in the world where the thresher shark can be seen within recreational diver limits on a regular basis.
The world-famous thresher sharks of Malapascua are typically seen at sunrise, enjoying their morning clean at stations along Monad Shoal. Their daily routine is so predictable that divers descend to the 80ft (25m) sandy bottom and simply wait for the sharks to turn up.
However, there is far more to this tiny island than the threshers. The Malapascua dive scene is well known for its amazing macro life, with critters such as pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, blue-ringed octopus, seamoths, and frogfish amongst the tiny species that can be spotted on a dive here. Dusk dives will also turn up the beautiful mandarin fish, and other highlights include reef sharks, mantas, and devil rays.

More information about Philippines diving
Malapascua Island, Cebu, is renowned as the world's premier destination for thresher shark encounters, with Monad Shoal offering daily sightings of these magnificent creatures. Divers at Monad Shoal typically find the sharks early in the morning, as they come in for cleaning on the sandy bottom at around 25 meters (90 feet). Beyond its famous thresher sharks, Malapascua provides excellent macro diving opportunities, with sites like Gato Island showcasing vibrant marine life, including cuttlefish, seahorses, and nudibranchs. The island's shallow reefs are perfect for macro photography, while its pristine waters and white sandy beaches create an idyllic tropical setting. Diving is possible year-round, though visibility may be reduced during the typhoon season from July to October.
