Dive Overview
Scuba diving in Indonesia is simply a must for any avid diver. Hosting over25% of the worlds fish species, as well as over 72% of the worldwide coral species, Indonesia is often cited as the world's epicenter of biodiversity with the greatest marine life variety ever recorded on earth, alongside the Philippines and a small number of other Coral Triangle destinations.
Diving in Raja Ampat is characterized by its mindblowing diversity, featuring a plethora of medium to large size fish, good macro, and great hard and soft coral reefs, along with some muck and mangrove sites. The water temperatures hover at around 89F (31C) year-round--so warm that a wetsuit is hardly needed. The archipelago's topside scenery is also stunning.
You'll find one of the highest numbers of fish species of any place on the planet when diving in Raja Ampat, making it one of our top 5 underwater photography destinations. This area also hosts some of the world's most beautiful coral reefs.

Detailed information about the itinerary
Raja Ampat Overview
Located in the Northwest corner of Indonesian West Papua, at the meeting points of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, pristine coral reefs (home to 75% of all known corals) teem with such an array of marine life that scientists describe it as a species factory.
This spectacular variety of marine life (over 1,300 species of fish, 600 mollusk species) combines with some of the natural worlds most exotic birds including distinct Birds of Paradise. This is Raja Ampat: the undisputed epicenter of marine biodiversity and one of the richest marine ecosystems in the World.
The Raja Ampat archipelago (which when translated to English, means Four Kings) encompasses 40,000 square km of land and sea, consisting of over 1,500 islets that surround the 4 main islands of Misool, Batanta, Salawati & Waigeo. The first comprehensive scientific study of the area was conducted as recently as 2001, and a record-breaking census found nearly 1,000 previously unknown tropical fish species. With the unearthing of Raja Ampats biodiversity still in progress, international conservation groups, in partnership with local communities and government, established 7 ecologically connected marine protected areas (MPA) in 2007, and another 5 across the Birds Head Peninsula have been added since.
The relative remoteness of Raja Ampat has been the regions greatest defense against overuse and exploitation, resulting in a pristine ecosystem unfettered by the maelstroms of industrialization with ecological wealth unsurpassed anywhere else on the planet.
Calico Jacks crew have a distinct passion and reverence for the natural world. They explored these regions avidly; plotting out a journey that would reveal Raja Ampats finest topographical and underwater wonders to share with like-minded individuals. Her crew has worked tirelessly to create all-encompassing trips that would allow explorers ranging from the most avid scuba diver and experienced twitcher to leisure-seekers or those looking to enhance their intercultural and ecological understanding, the opportunity to have the most memorable and life-affirming experience.

This area is home to Indonesias largest marine park, the area boasts stunning tropical rain forests, mist- topped limestone cliffs and some of the finest corals and dramatic wall dives in West Papua.
Cenderawasih Bay is one of the only places in the world where its possible to see such large numbers of Whale sharks so easily. Divers and snorkelers are treated to a very unique experience as the sharks circle floating fishing platforms ( Bagans ) that target small baitfish and squid.
The Whale Sharks are regular visitors to the Bagans and hand-fed by the local fisherman who believes the whale sharks bring good luck. Interacting with Cenderawasihs resident giants is truly a lifetime experience.
Another highlight in the area is Manokawri Bay, which provided safe anchorage for the Japanese during the second world war. Numerous wrecks are scattered around the bay.
Several wrecks are currently accessible to reactional dives with many still to be discovered. The wrecks are covered in corals and home to a large variety of sea life. Some of the boats are still remarkably preserved and you can still see ammunition, helmets, and cargo. - When not diving the fishy sites, there is amazing macro diving to be found. All five species of pygmy seahorse can be found with solid predictability not only Denise and Bargibanti, but also the very tiny species of Pontohi and Sotomi. It is the home of more species of fish and corals than any other area in Indonesia. If you are interested in traveling and diving in Indonesia, you can join Calico Jacks Liveaboard Diving adventures. The trip on Calico Jack was a resounding success. We where only 6 passengers on a 10 passenger boat. The two single Guys where instantly upgrade to single Occupancy cabins. The diving in the northern part right out of Manokwari was marked by WW2 wrecks of ships smaller vessels and aircraft from both sides of the conflict. It reached from a very large heavy transport ship to a wonderful overgrown patrol boat. The food was good it catered to the mostly British clientele on this trip. The chef tried his best to please the taste and heat tolerance of food. I like spicy foods, so I was admiring the Indonesian chefs ability to make the food bland. There were options for me. The middle part of the cruise was marked by very seldom visited dive sites with wonderful pristine sea fans and black corals with everything that lives in it. My favourites are black corals so I got everything I could hope for. The dives were interesting because there was a mix of very nice coral reefs that ended up in a rocky little island or other rock feature that where not overgrown by corals. It turned out that the rock is granite and the corals seem not to like to grow on it. It makes for a very interesting area where lots of coral fish inhabit huge blocks of rock. It also gives big groupers lots of hiding places. The southern part near Nabire is of course marked by the whale sharks coming to fishing platforms to feed on little fish. We did 5 dives with this magnificent creatures over two days. It rained heavily on the first day the rain created a green layer of water over the clear water below. The water temperature was also markably lower in the green. The second day made it clear what the green water did to photography. It was Cristal Clear and bright ideal for taking pictures with no flash. Diving with this giants is definitely a highlight. I stayed in Nabire for two days after disembarking. I found a very interesting big market and an access to the beach to walk by some boat repair facilities to the market.
