Ramon's Village Resort Belize
Ramon’s Village is so lovely. Very sweet folk working there and a good dive outfit. The diving off the resort is pretty unremarkable - very healthy corals: hard, soft, fans and sponges. Not a great deal of life apart from very inquisitive nurse sharks and the odd reef shark. Saw a couple of turtles and spent a wonderful minute playing with a dolphin.
The real stuff is a reasonably long and very bouncy boat trip away - the Blue Hole is about a 5-hour round trip. But extraordinary - 140ft down swimming through enormous stalactites. The other 2 dives there, by Half Moon Caye (a UNESCO island - red-footed booby colony - gorgeous) are wonderful - thick with fish and great wall diving.
Turneffe atoll is another top site. Again, about a 3-hour round trip, but sensational dives. Clear water, amazing sea life, very healthy corals.
Bottom line is - don’t send really posh divers to Ambergris. I’m sure a liveaboard that works around the Blue Hole and Turneffe would work for even the most jaded divers.
