Buddy Dive Bonaire Resort

Diving in Bonaire is so easy and comfortable. The water is around 80 degrees F all year round. There are dive sites all around the island, marked with a yellow rock near the road, and a yellow buoy at the site. Buddy Dive Resort provides a truck that will seat four people along with the accommodations. The shore diving is unsurpassed, but if you want more, they also have a fleet of boats that will take you to sites not easily accessible from shore. Buddy dive provides breakfast daily, and has a restaurant on site for other meals. The rooms have kitchens in them as well, if you want to cook your own meals. Buddy Dive resort also has a great house reef, with a coral restoration site, a small wreck, and several "hoops" you can swim through to test your buoyancy.. You can see beautiful seascapes, the wreck nicknamed the "Hilma Hooker" and all kinds of marine life, such as Trumpet fish, Barracuda, Morey eels, garden eels, lobster and slipper lobster, and small critters such as hermit crabs and the lettuce leaf sea slug. It's the kind of resort you will want to return to again and again.

Fiji

Bula! My first dive destination after I became certified was to Fiji. We stayed in Nadi, which is close enough to the Mamanutha islands that you can easily plan a 3 dive day trip to many of the islands and surrounding reefs. These islands offer all kinds of diving for all levels of divers, however, we found that the reefs there were a bit disappointing and covered with silt. The water conditions were ideal, with 80 degrees F and visibility from 100+ feet. These islands offer shark diving, drift diving, walls, and a large variety of fish, crustaceans, and critters. In addition, there are lots of tours offered to visit these islands from the main island. You can visit several of them by sailboat in a day, or stay in a resort on one of the tiny islands.

We also dived up near Raki Raki (northeast part of the island, about a two hour drive from Nadi Airport) on the beautiful "Golden Dream" and "Dreammaker" dive sites in the Bligh waters. Although we did this in a day, I would recommend staying in one of the lovely resorts along the Northeast coast of the island. These boasted incredible 60 foot tall coral columns, soft corals, and all kinds of marine life from sharks to nudibranchs. I would highly recommend the northern waters of Vitu Levu, the largest island, for diving. The reefs are beautiful, healthy and full of colorful life. The water temperatures are warm year round (78 to 82 degrees F), and the visibility is great.

The people of Fiji were warm and welcoming. We found plenty to do on the islands with activities that included hiking in the lush rain forests, sailing, fishing, and special village tours where we obtained permission from the clan chief to explore their land. Fiji will forever be one of my favorite dive and travel destinations.

Reef House Resort Roatan

The Reef House Resort in Roatan, Honduras is a great dive resort for people who are interested in diving, diving and more diving. The resort is a bit secluded, and it would take some time and effort to experience other parts of Roatan. The accommodations are a little rustic, and reminded me of camping, but the rooms were clean, and always had a pitcher of fresh water. The resort is small, accommodating only a few dozen guests. It sits right on the water and has it's own pier and house reef with excellent diving just outside your room. There is a locker room for your gear, rinse tanks for gear and designated camera rinse tank. They also rent equipment, and provide air and nitrox. This resort is all-inclusive and the meals are served family style. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. The price for the week was excellent and about half of what is charged at the West End. This resort sits on the East end of the island, on a tiny key. The reefs on this end of the island are pristine as there are not many resorts on the East end and thus, very few divers. We especially enjoyed the full-time Dive Master, Davit, who was an excellent guide. We enjoyed three dives a day, unlimited shore diving and one night dive for a 7-night stay. The marine life is very diverse; sea horses, banded shrimp, crabs of all kinds, puffers, barracuda, and all the usual Caribbean reef fish. Typically the dives sites are wall dives and some have fantastic swim-throughs and interesting topography.

Spirit of Freedom Liveaboard

The Spirit of Freedom is a liveaboard dream vacation in Australia's Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea. The ship has spacious state rooms with private bathrooms and the staff is friendly and accommodating. The cook created gourmet meals four times a day, and the food was absolutely delicious. The hard working staff also took time to dive with the patrons (even the cook!). Most impressive were the pristine reefs in the Coral Sea. We dived famous sites such as Cod Hole and Snake Pit, enjoying the giant cod, snakes, manta rays, and tiny critters such as nudibranchs, pygmy sea horses, and pipe fish. The boat also does a shark dive at the iconic Osprey Reef. The Spirit of Freedom offers three, four, and seven day vacations with one day visiting Lizard Island.

"Snake Pit" dive site didn't dissappoint. The snakes were prolific and we also got a fly by of a beautiful manta ray.
