Dive Into Raja Ampat

I recently had the most incredible experience at Waiwo Dive Resort in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by how stunning everything was. The diving was absolutely phenomenal. The dive staff took care of all of our gear, making the whole experience seamless and stress-free. The underwater world in Raja Ampat is like no other - vibrant coral reefs, abundant marine life, and crystal-clear waters. Truly a diver’s paradise.

The resort itself is beautiful, with comfortable bungalows that are perfect for relaxing after a day of diving. The food was plentiful, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Every meal felt like a treat! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Ena and Prisca, who made our stay extra special with their warmth and attentiveness. The owners, Peter and Tika, were gracious hosts, always making sure everything was perfect for their guests.

What made this trip even more special was the kindness of the local people. The Indonesians are, without a doubt, the friendliest people I’ve encountered in all my travels. We had the chance to ride scooters around the island, exploring until the roads ended, and every person we met along the way was so welcoming and generous with their time.

This resort, the diving, the people, and the natural beauty of Raja Ampat left a lasting impression on me. I can’t wait to go back! It’s truly a hidden gem that offers everything you could want in a tropical getaway. If you’re looking for an unforgettable dive trip, Waiwo is the place to be!

The boat was very spacious and comfortable. The staff were kind and accommodating and created a great atmosphere. Food was delicious! The diving I found to be mixed - very sadly, some of the central RA sites are undergoing massive bleaching right now. The difference from when I dove some of the sites 5 years ago was shocking. If you know the site Sewandarek jetty, the conditions of that dive made me very sad. Luckily, the corals in Misool were in much better shape, and I enjoyed those dives a lot. We had several dives completely blanketed in schools of anchovies and other types of fish. Absolutely magical!

The room and resort were absolutely beautiful. The staff were all so good. The atmosphere was very welcoming; the new dining area is really nice. It just gives the best kind of vacation vibes! As to the diving - we had great conditions and found very healthy corals and a nice mix of creatures. Our highlight was seeing a dugong!! A brief encounter but one I’ll remember forever. I also did a blackwater dive for the first time which was a cool experience.

I am very pleased with the boat - Great crew, generous rooms, salon and dive deck with space for camera layout etc.
The food is probably one of the best I’ve had on a Liveaboard, with plenty of fresh veggies, seafood, and local dishes to please everyone.
The DMs are knowledgeable about the marine life and dive sites. I would recommend this boat to anyone (and would do this again on the same boat.)
The only drawback is the diving on the dinghy which is a huge inconvenience during rough sea (at Wolf and Darwin). We often have to wait, being toss up and down in the strong current, for over 15 minutes for everyone to get out of the water !!!

Atlantis Dive Resort, Dumaguete

The dive team met us at Dumaguete airport and took our bags and us to the resort. They have it all down to a system
The resort:
Rooms: Just beautiful. We had a garden room with lanai that had two beds and was huge, large bathroom, big shower and a bonus room, small combination closet with safe, place to put your bags. The resort wasn't full so they upgraded our friends' rooms.
The grounds of the resort were beautiful, kept up every day by sweeping the paths and gardeners working to keep it nice every day. One gardener, "Serafin", showed us a tree he had planted himself 25 years ago, that was huge now!
Service: excellent. They almost know what you want in advance. Best service of any resort we have been to. Everyone is smiling and friendly always.
Food: very good, very plentiful. Breakfast from a menu, lunch and dinner on the blackboard with two choices of starter, three of main dish, and dessert. They remembered most of the time that I am allergic to mango. It was so much food that most of our group started ordering 1/2 orders. Also, it was a little spicy for me - different spices that we are not used to.
Spa: most of our group took advantage of the inexpensive massage menu, and it was great. The pool area is shaded because of the vegetation, so it's cool water.
Diving: this is also set up very well. Our dive guide was Norway. You have to check your Nitrox tanks yourself and get your wetsuit and fins, mask to the boat but they do everything else, they work hard! The boats are a little hard to get on, walk over rocks to get on, they help you. The bigger boats are great.
The diving was nice, some critters, but someone had told us that the muck diving was spectacular. It did not measure up to Lembeh straight. But we saw many cool things; cuttlefish, black ribbon eel, scorpion fish, harlequin shrimp, thorny seahorse, wonderpus, frog fish, to name a few.
Apo: Three dive day with lunch on the boat, very nice. Takes an hour to get there. The coral is in good shape and we saw lots of critters. The ladies of Apo island come out to the boat and sell you t-shirts after lunch. It is quite an experience. There are about six ladies who are in your face with the shirts. I bought a bunch of them.

Magic Oceans Dive Resort, Bohol

Magic Oceans was simply outstanding. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to friends/family. Every single staff member continually went above and beyond to ensure our time here was excellent. Many staff even went so far as to learn our names. The kitchen had no issue at all accommodating Kyle's gluten free diet. In fact, they went out of their way to prepare a gluten free riff on each night's menu. Some highlights that Kyle was impressed and thrilled about were gluten free onion rings (a delightful novelty!), Bicol Express, and really all the other safe and delicious creations that the chef prepared. It was a treat to be able to let his guard down and enjoy the dining experience. For travelers with dietary restrictions, Magic Ocean is a truly wonderful choice.

The diving there was great. The divemasters (particularly Larry) were incredible and the crew pulled out all the stops to make diving as easy and enjoyable as possible (carrying all gear, assistance on the boat, and just being kind and attentive). We'd read reviews talking about the reef damage from a recent typhoon that hit the area. We did see areas of hard coral that were destroyed, but there were plenty of dive sites that were untouched as a counterpoint to the wrecked ones. It didn't detract at all from our experience. We also booked a day trip on our off-gassing day with Magic Ocean where we traveled to a number of attractions (Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Sanctuary, River Boat lunch, and monkey feeding) which we wouldn't have done on our own. One of our dive masters was our tour guide and did a fantastic job showing us around.

The wreck diving in Truk Lagoon was a one-of-a-kind, wonderful underwater experience. I had a fantastic time. Diving each wreck was memorizing and unlocking secrets from the past. There was so much variety. The dive profile was deeper than I was used to, so it was nice to exit my comfort zone and experience diving within my limits but a different kind of path. The wrecks are truly a gift despite the unfortunate demise and tragedy that unfolded resulting in their sinking.

The cabins were great. The housekeeper made up the room at respectable times daily. There was good space on the ship, operating at half capacity. Rooms were spacious enough. The non-ensuite bathroom was not a problem. Did stub my toe once getting around and scraping my calf going down metal stairs was on-going.

The crew was top-notch. They were well organized and the way it worked out with migrating divers to other teams, I ended up with a local dive guide all to myself-- what a luxury! They handled all social situations respectfully and all the briefings were excellent. All the crew worked their hardest to please the guests, and I was very happy with the level of service.

Cocos Island Diving

I had an incredible dive trip to Cocos Island, the best diving trip I've had in over 25 years. There was something fun to experience on every dive. I think we saw hammerheads on about 70% of the dives. Other sharks were tigers (twice), Galapagos (several), silvertips, and whitetips. We saw several bait balls, which were beautiful. Marbled rays were prevalent throughout the trip and were always a pleasure to see. I will definitely go back to dive Cocos Island again!

Some notes that may help other travelers: The crossing to Cocos was rough, and about half the passengers got seasick to some extent. There was rain every day, but only once it affected visibility in the shallower portion of the dive. It is pretty cold, so plan to dress warmly and bring sturdy gloves to hold onto the reef and rocks in the strong current. There are also lots of sea urchins, so watch out for them.
