Cape Nunukae is a large ridge with slopes on both sides and covered with a hard coral reef on the shallow area of the ridge, and soft corals on the slopes in the deeper areas. Strong currents can be had at the end of the ridge, where large aggregations of schooling fish can be found. Cruise overnight a few hours to Gunung Api 75nm.
  • Day 5 (4 dives): Gunung Api – during October and November we have the chance to see the schooling hammerheads this area is becoming famous for. Gunung Api is already a rare and unusual dive site consisting mainly of sea snakes – mostly Chinese green snakes with a few banded sea snakes as well. No need to be scared but be prepared to have some awesome dives !!! Overnight to Damar 110nm.

It’s at these 2 atolls where there is a good chance of seeing hammerhead sharks – even without – the reefs are fabulous, healthy walls and 50+ meter visibility. Cruise overnight to Gili Manuk 70nm.
  • Day 8 (4 dives): Manuk – Snake Volcano – sometimes more snakes than Gunung Api (still no need to be afraid !) The site also offers a black sand reef dive with loads of fish and pretty hard corals. We have breakfast at the nutmeg plantation! Cruise overnight to Nusa Laut 75nm or Ambon 110nm.

I went to Indonesia Bali and Komodo National Park in December. The staff was great and everyone had a chance to see everything on each dive. The water temp varied from 79 to 81 degrees, so 90 percent of the time it was short and a rash guard, but when you hit a thermocline you felt it. The boat has wetsuits and and emergency reg or extra gear to rent if you need more gear. The colors or rich and deep, purples, yellows, oranges, etc. At one site you will dive black sandy bottom with pink and orange hard and soft corals. Awesome The bio diversity ranged from 10 manta rays to the smallest squid or cuttlefish that was the size of a coffee bean. Incredible macro photography. The boat has a professional video/photographer highly recommend his video at the end of the dive about $100 US. Also at the end of the trip they give you an electronic log of all your dives and site maps to show your friends. The cabin are designed to hold to people and you have enough room but the bathroom/shower is small but you get use to it quickly. Food was great, you will gain weight if you want to. Seconds and thirds are not out of the question, not to mention the snacks between dives. We had a shore day and spent it with the Komodo dragons. The park staff were professional and accommodating if you want to get closer to get the ultimate picture. You are always in safe hands. Plan on going again. Great Value for Indonesia, beats shore based any day. I would say the boat is between mid range to luxury.

Diving Komodo National Park aboard Mermaid II - review

I joined this trip at the last minute when another trip fell through, and was so glad I did. This part of Indonesia offers some of the most varied dive experiences you could ever hope to have in nine days, from stunning encounters with manta rays in strong currents to leisurely fossicks on shallow, brilliantly coloured, sunlit reefs and sand slopes followed by superb night dives, rich with remarkable creatures.

GETTING THERE AND BACK

Mermaid II is based at the main port in southern Bali, so is easily accessed from most parts of the world. You'll need to battle your way through crowded Denpasar Airport and find overnight accommodation at either end of the trip, but there are plenty of cheap and very comfortable hotels to choose from and Bali is famous for its hospitality and tourist activities. The Mermaid II mini bus collects guests from their accommodation and delivers them to the wharf.

THE BOAT

Mermaid II is a nice boat with good dining and recreation spaces. Cabins are on two levels and the upper ones are nice and airy. The lower ones tend to be a little cramped and lack windows or portholes, but the facilities are still fine. We were made very welcome on arrival and given a thorough safety briefing.

THE FOOD

It goes without saying that if you're in Indonesia the food will be fantastic, and of course it is. Three main meals a day, a light breakfast before the first dive, morning and afternoon teas with cakes and fruit whenever there's space for them, as well as refreshments on tap and a full bar service. They cater for special dietary needs and you can chose non-Indonesian options from the varied platters if that's what you prefer.

THE COMPANY

It also goes without saying that if you're in Indonesia the crew will be friendly, polite and hardworking. The Zodiac drivers were some of the best and keenest-eyed I've ever experienced. Even in strong currents they seemed to know exactly where everyone would come up and we rarely had to wait more than a few moments to be helped out of the water. The dive guides and the camera man came from various parts of the world and seemed to enjoy the diving just as much as the guests. At least one of them would stay down for as long as anyone else had air.

THE DIVE ROUTINE

The dive deck is spacious with a dive platform just a few steps below at the rear of the boat. Divers are assisted from the platform into Zodiacs in groups of about six plus a guide, and are able to take off both their weight belt and tank before climbing back into the Zodiac if desired. Everyone is welcomed back onto the dive deck into the embrace of their own pre-warmed towel. This might be the tropics but the water can be cool, so what a difference a warm towel makes, especially after a longish night dive! Another comfort bonus was the massages available on board.

DIVES AND MARINE LIFE

Only 12 hours sailing from the bustle and lushness of Bali and we were among the thinly populated, barren islands of Sumbaya. Spectacular landscapes included many volcanoes standing out against the horizon. The first few days were colourful reef dives with plenty of variety for the photographer and naturalist. Day 3 brought encounters with white tipped sharks, turtles, and lazy schools of sweetlips, then on Day 4 shallow dives in a brisk current above a bare sandy bottom yielded my best manta encounters ever. How do they manage to hover so effortlessly in one place while I am being swept away in the current? Luckily there were enough rocks to hang on to for long enough to take pictures.

On Day 5 we went ashore for Komodo Dragon encounters, which were well up to expectations and definitely a must-do. This was followed by dives around Komodo Island in a completely different and uniquely colourful reef environment, brilliant with anemones, sea cucumber, crinoids, fantastic nudibranchs and even ribbon eels. The return trip was similar to the outward journey but on different sites, and included more fabulous encounters with mantas and more delightful reefs. Then the skipper announced that mola mola (sunfish) had been sighted of the southern tip of Bali, and asked if we wanted to cut short our reef ramble and take a look. The current whipping past Crystal Bay was so strong that it took half an hour for the Zodiacs to make the short crossing from Mermaid II into the shelter of the bay. By then it was pretty obvious that 'hang on tightly to a rock at all times' was very sound advice. We descended into calm water then worked our way carefully along the wall towards the point until we were clinging on in the teeth of the current, peering out into the blue. Some claimed to have glimpsed the mola mola on the first dive, but on the second dive we definitely saw it, moving much faster than I would have expected. When we got back to the big boat our trip leader had just been informed that eight divers were swept away from that spot the previous day and were very fortunate to be hauled out of the water by fishermen 12 hours later, many kilometres away. Luckily we had done as we were told and seen the mola mola without being swept away, truly the icing on our cake after a very special dive trip.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first liveaboard trip with Mermaid II to Komodo from Bali. The crew and company aboard were great and made the trip a truly relaxing active experience. The dive sites in Komodo park were awesome and had great biodiversity - hard & soft corals, sponges, nudis, fish, crab/shrimp/lobsters, eels, rays, sharks, turtles etc - while my team didn't see any mantas others spotted them on our trip. Accommodations were fine. Bathrooms are a bit small - shower is basically over the toilet - but it's a boat and I don't have another reference point for this. That said, others have mentioned there was more bathroom/shower space on their prior liveaboad experiences in other parts of the world. Food was solid - hearty with decent options, cannot complain. The variety and quality didn't blow my mind though hence the 4 starts. The crew and dive operation itself were really solid - they definitely all went the extra mile - and the tenders really helped make the 3-4 dives a day a smooth operation. Hot chocolate offered on the back deck after the night dives really hit the spot and our individual post-dive towels were always dry and at the ready. While we lost an engine to a malfunction on the first night cutting the trip short by a couple dives, thankfully we were still able to get by on one engine given the close proximity of the dive sites in Komodo, and after a polite inquiry, Mermaid agreed to comp us our nitrox for the week in return. Overall a great experience, really delivered on my Indo expectations and would definitely consider diving with the Mermaid crew again - perhaps to Raj Ampat next time!

My son and I did the 7 day Bali-Komodo-Bali trip in Aug 2023. In a nutshell, it was an extraordinary experience, and very good value. The staff on the board were absolutely amazing - so professional and so attentive...and also light-hearted and fun. The boat is extremely well-designed, and very clean and well-equipped. And the food was a highlight - there's lots of it, and the variety of what they are able to cook up is impressive given the constraints of a kitchen on a boat.

The diving is truly world class - the coral is still pristine in this area, and the marine life is mind-boggling.

Would highly, highly recommend this boat and trip.

I just returned from a 9 day trip on Mermaid II to Raja Ampat. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The dive area on the boat was very organized. I can’t say enough great things about the staff on the staff on this boat. Clement is the cruise director and he is fun, friendly, knowledgeable about the area and really organized! His assistants, Luca and Sari are equally wonderful! All of the dive masters are knowledgeable and attentive. I had a hamstring injury 2 weeks prior to my trip and was concerned about not being able to dive. The staff helped with my gear and thankfully I was able to make every dive. The food is amazing! I forgot the name of the sweet lady in the kitchen every day but she also gets 5 stars. Lots of food and snacks. Hot chocolate after the night dive was yummy! They have alcohol on the boat for purchase. The diving was very diverse with beautiful coral. One of the night dives was a muck dive and absolutely incredible! The viz was a little low due to plankton but that just brought more things to see! I would highly recommend this boat! You will not be disappointed. If you are a photographer make sure you bring charging strips with the appropriate adapter. There isn’t a dedicated camera room and charging is limited.
