Since 1997, DIVE.IS has been organizing tours to Silfra, where guests can dive between two continental plates and experience the clearest water on earth. DIVE.IS tours are rated as the best outdoor activity in Reykjavk. The DIVE.IS team is a close-knit group of people who are passionate about nature and the underwater world. 

DIVE.IS has been awarded The Best of the Best Traveler's choice award of 2022. Their tour Silfra: Snorkeling between tectonic plates, is in 5th place of the Top Snorkeling & Water Sports in the World.

How to Get There

There are direct flights to Reykjavik's main airport, Keflavik International Airport (KEF) from numerous US cities including Seattle and Portland on the west coast; Denver and Chicago; as well as Orlando, Washington, New York, and Boston on the east coast. Visitors departing from Europe can fly direct from almost every European capital.

Guests staying in the Reykjavik central area can avail of the transportation shuttle provided by DIVE.IS, while guests staying outside of Reykjavik will need to make their way to Silfra on their own, or drive into the city where DIVE.IS can coordinate their pickup with them.

Dive Information

Marine life is surprisingly abundant around coastal Iceland, with varied cold-water ecosystems supporting healthy marine life. Visibility on shore dives is very varied depending on the weather, however, it is possible to spot unusual species large and small on most dives. Some of the most abundant and unique marine life is found in the protected reserve at Strytan.

While Silfra offers stunning rock formations, unparalleled visibility and unbelievable shades of blue, there is no life to be observed except for the occasional fish getting lost and wandering in the crack from Thingvellir lake. The lack of life is one of the reasons why the water in Silfra is so pure and has virtually no suspended particles.

For those keen to photograph unique underwater topography, Iceland's inland sites don't disappoint. The sparkling clear water provides perfect conditions for capturing unusual rock formations in a variety of bright colors.

Diving in Iceland, for all but the hardiest of divers, requires a drysuit. While you will need to be qualified or experienced as a drysuit diver, DIVE.IS has a large number of suits available to rent. DIVE.IS is well-aware that many visitors will not be accustomed to cold water diving, and so they offer hot drinks between dives and a heated van or trailer to warm up in during the surface interval.

For divers without the required experience, DIVE.IS offers PADI Dry Suit course all year round, as well as a 2-day package that includes the dry suit course and one dive at Silfra. Other pre-trip certficiations are also available. Contact us for more information.

Silfra Gap is diveable year-round as it never freezes and water temperatures remain the same. So it just depends on the topside weather as to whether you are happy to dive or not! Other sites tend to be seasonal as the water freezes and the weather blows out.

• Water temperature: Silfra 35.5-39^oF (2-4^oC) year-round, ocean diving averages between 39 and 45^oF (4-7^oC).
• Visibility: Silfra offers some of the clearest water in the world!
• Depth Range: 32-131+ft (10-40+m).
• Diving Difficulty: Silfra is suitable for all abilities, including snorkelers, and ocean diving varies depending on the site.

padi dive courses

All rates are in USD and per person.

*For the PADI referral base package, guests have the option to complete the PADI Open Water Elearning online and do skills in a pool. Once complete, the course can be completed aboard or in warmer waters. This option is great for those that do not want to spend days on their vacation studying but start diving right away.
