Dive Information
Playa Del Carmen Reef Diving
When it comes to reef diving, Playa del Carmen is your perfect base location. Many of the greatest open sea diving sites along the Great Mayan Reef Barrier are located right off the shores of Playa del Carmen in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Depart from Playa del Carmen to explore the most colorful and interesting diving sites in the world’s second largest coral reef. Water temperature and visibility, combined with the flourishing underwater life of coral reefs, make Playa del Carmen a superior diving destination all year round.
Cenote Cavern Diving
The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its unique underground conditions. Its limestone soil has percolated rainwater over millions of years to give place to the world’s longest underground river system. Parts of the surface land have collapsed over the years creating sinkholes called Cenotes, windows into this amazing underground world.
Diving in a Cenote is a unique experience. These caverns are windows to the world’s largest underground river systems and were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. Their water is so clear with over 500 feet visibility that it will make your cavern diving adventure unforgettable. In some Cenotes you will see beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, amazing light effects as the sunlight shines through cracks in the ceiling and halocline effect.
Cozumel Wall Diving
In 1961, the famous oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau came to Cozumel with his crew on the Calypso to film a documentary. With the first airing of that film, Cozumel has consistently been on the top of many diving lists among diver’s destinations. It is quite normal to see vast coral heads, brilliant sponges, hundreds of tropical fish, rich ecosystems and steep walls that sink into the abyss. Tunnels and caves twist through the reef, providing a rich environment for many species, including some not found anywhere else on earth.
Cozumel is world-renown to be part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world and is considered some of the best wall diving in the world. While diving in Cozumel, the average visibility is more than 130 feet or 40 meters and vertical drop-offs to deep blue abyss is what Cozumel diving is famous for. When diving in Cozumel there is over 15 world famous wall dives like Palancar, Santa Rosa, Colombia, San Francisco, Punta Sur, Maracaibo, Yucab, Cordona, and the list goes on. Large sponges and beautiful corals are what make Cozumel a definite must-see for any certified diver!
Wreck Diving
In Playa Del Carmen, “Mama Viña” is a former shrimp boat intentionally sunk in 1995 for the fun of divers. At maximum 27 meters/90 feet depth, you will enjoy this dive site who is also full of marine life! Also, we propose a wreck in Puerto Morelos. The wreck is an armed C-56 “Juan Escutia,” donated and sunk by the Mexican Navy in 2000. This 30 meters depth site is known for the wreck of course but also because you might have the chance to see many spotted eagle rays.
In Cozumel, there is a C-53 Felipe Xicotenantl, a Mexican Navy Minesweeper sunk in 2000. C-53 is in 80 feet of water and sits on the sandy bottom in Chankanaab Bay. The sides have been opened up to allow divers to enter and exit safely. This reef is home to sardines, and other reef fish.
Bull Shark Diving
This is the extreme scuba diving experience for certified divers who want to experience the most thrilling dive in the world. In November the bull sharks visit us to spend the winter here and they stay until March when they migrate north. This is a dive program that not only introduces adventure seeking divers to wild sharks but also gives them a closer look at these magnificent and mysterious creatures.
The bull sharks are a special species of shark that can actually swim in freshwater as well. The bulls of Playa are drawn here because of the freshwater cenotes that pump out into the sea along the coast. The exits for these cenotes are too small for a shark to pass through but the constant flow of freshwater leaving the cenote exits certainly draws them, as well as an abundant food supply of fish, into the area. Playa del Carmen is also known to have a rather large turtle population which is another food source for the bull sharks.
